Professor Stanley Hoffmann 1928–2015
Professor Stanley Hoffmann (27 November 1928 – 13 September 2015) was a member of iQ’s Advisory Council. He was the Paul and Catherine Buttenwieser University Professor at Harvard Law School, where he had taught since 1955. Among his areas of focus were international politics, ethics and world affairs, modern political ideologies, the development of the modern state, and U.S. foreign policy. Professor Hoffman was the Chairman of Harvard’s Center for European Studies from its creation in 1969 to 1995.
Among his publications are ‘Decline or Renewal?: France Since the 30s’, ‘Primacy or World Order: American Foreign Policy since the Cold War’, ‘Duties Beyond Borders’, ‘The Ethics and Politics of Humanitarian Intervention’, and ‘World Disorders’. He was co-author of ‘The Mitterrand Experiment’, ‘The New European Community’, and ‘After the Cold War’. Professor Hoffman taught previously at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris, from which he graduated, and at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.
